Fox and Owl Folk Art Flip Doll

Just listed this cutie on eBay! I haven't really had and eBay presence so we'll have to see how this goes. I'm completely smitten with this doll and am thoroughly glad that I revisited sculpting Thanks again Jane! However, I feel a little silly because I can't wait to get back from my vacation with friends (sans wee ones) and get started on more! lol. You see my significant other has been away for about the last year with business and he's finally back on a regular basis. That means I get to take a well deserved break away from "it all." So I've only recently rediscovered sculpting and love it so much that I've even been debating on taking clay with me! I guess that's how you know that you love what you do! Perhaps this a sign of addiction? As a compromise I think I may just take a sketch book and work on some designs while my friends work on their tans! I'm redheaded and pale so tanning never works out in my favor! lol. Thus, I am forever grateful for sketchbooks!

Bee Eater Sculpture

Mixed Media Sculpture Owl Bee Eater
I spent a majority of my Friday night completely absorbed in this owl mixed media sculpture. I'm waiting for the clay to dry in order to put on a first layer of paint. Hopefully tonight!

The Beekeeper

BeeKeeper Folk Art Doll
BeeKeeper Whimsical Art Doll
Recycled art doll

I've always wondered what it would be like to keep a hive of bees. I'm certain that I'm romanticising the idea in my head, but it just seems so intriguing to me. I think about the delicious honey they'd make. The good they'd do pollinating nearby gardens and fields. Then there's the bee's wax. One could make their own encaustic wax or candles, or even natural lip balm. Oh the possibilities! Like I said, I'm completely romanticising the idea. Well here is my little beekeeper who gets to do all of those dreamy things.

Details: She made of paper clay, polymer, and fabric. She sits quite nicely on a shelf and her bodice is covered with used thesaurus pages. The honey bees are made of recycled / reused / repurposed? envelope window plastic. The bee wings and hive are sprinkled with a bit of glitter which you can see in the photo below:

Here are some of the words you'll find on her: goody-goody, honey bee, communal, earnest, faithful, goody two shoes, entwined, dweller, lovely, bewitching, prime, primitive, existence, and harvest to name a few.
While I was searching for vintage photos of beekeepers to share with this blog post I found this interesting vintage photo of a lady in her costume that is adorned with large bees! I made the doll prior to finding this photo but I think it would have made a great reference photo to work from! Too funny!

Fox and Owl Art Doll Complete!

All done with this folk art doll. Would you believe that this is one doll! The dress flips to reveal the other half of the doll! A fox holding a baby owl on one side and an owl holding a baby fox on the other. You see when I was little my Grandmother crocheted a set of reversible dolls for me. They were my favorite! I was particularly fond of the one that had little red riding hood which when flipped would reveal the Big Bad Wolf in Grandmother's clothes! So delightful. So in keeping with that idea I decided to make this little fox and owl doll! I'll be listing her for sale this Sunday on Ebay here. Until then here are pics!

Fox Folk Art Doll!

Fox Folk Art SculptureFox Folk Art Doll

Last night I stayed up into the wee hours of dark to make this Fox folk art doll come to fruition. She's a guardian of sorts. Guarding her sweet little cardinal from all the dangerous things she knows all too much of. I'm getting closer to listing this fox folk art sculpture with my bear. However, there is more brewing in the back of my head. Until then here she is:

Whimsical Folk Art Doll

Well here is my latest creation to add to my Fables and Foxes collection of works! I haven't made any sculptures in over a year and finally had the chance to answer that nagging call in the back of my mind to sculpt something. Here is the result! Her name is "Sorrow" and she'll be available in the shop as soon as she has some friends to accompany her. I'd hate for her to get lonely as she looks sad enough as it is. Well For now here's a peek at her.
